Bolognese are a sub-breed of the Bichon, as are Bichon Frise, Coton de Tulear, and Maltese. Bichon breeds were developed regionally in Europe for royalty and nobility (the Bolognese being the favorite of the Italians).

As monarchies fell out of favor, so did the fortunes of the Bichons. Some Bichons variations were lost to time; currently, the Bolognese have worked their way back from near extinction but remain a very rare breed.
